Abstract Journey

Above, something new, a three way collaborative effort by Ju Yanan, Zhang Hong, and me.  All painted in one spirited session using acrylics.  The painting measures one meter square, a format I quite like.  I find the results pleasing.  I seem to notice something new each time I look at the painting.  To be sure, this is a record shot.

In the Japanese Garden at Bloedel Reserve, at your feet, good design.  So rich, and pleasing.  All the elements, variety, repetition, color, texture, the lasting, the ephemeral.   

All you need to do is slow down, and observe.

Enjoy the splendor of color, form, light and shadow, rendered, in this case, from chalky pastels, one of my favorite mediums.  So much joy, on so small a footprint, 6" x 6".  All on black Canson paper.

Rainier On The Horizon

Mount Rainier, from 90 miles away, photo taken out of a car window.  Image slightly modified for emotional impact.  At once, imposing and massive, inspiring awe, that is, fear and respect.

Fine Line

Sometimes, there is a fine line between what is beautiful and what is ugly, as is the case, in my view, of these cranes peppering the landscape in the Seattle, Washington harbor.  The form of the crane is at once graceful, with an animal-like sense of beauty, and imposing on, and disruptive to the formerly pristine land/seascape.  Well, there is no going back, at least, for now.

Variety, repetition, color, style, mystery, they all work together to satisfy mind's quest for beauty.  Above, Dr. Ju's calligraphy, traditional brushwork with ink on paper, is transformed into digital art, made possible by the age we live in.  This is the latest stepping stone on our collaborative journey.

Collaborative calligraphy, is there such a thing?  Well, if there wasn't before, there is now.  Dr. Ju's masterful calligraphy has been scanned, and, through the miracle of modern creative software, re imagined in a new form, all for emotional impact.
